The Maryland State Department of Education requires that all students have a minimum of 75 hours of Service Learning, with at least 40 hours earned at the high school level, prior to May 1of their expected year of graduation from high school. Anne Arundel County Public Schools offers students the opportunity to complete the requirement while in school.
Instruction in Service Learning is provided during the following courses:
- 10 hours in US Government
- 10 hours in 10th grade Science
- 10 hours in Health Class
- 10 hours in 11th grade English
Any student who missed the Service Learning lesson or failed to complete a project or activity due to illness, transfer, or missed opportunities, can still earn credit for Service Learning outside of school by working with nonprofit organizations or community service agencies. Follow the link below for a list of approved organizations.
Documentation of an activity to meet Service Learning requirements must be submitted to the school Guidance Center for validation. Students must complete all the components on the Service Learning Project Reporting Form and have it signed by the organization’s administrator or person in charge of the student’s service activity. A letter from the organization, on organization letterhead and signed by the project supervisor, may be substituted for the SL Project Reporting Form, so long as the letter contains all the elements required by the form (hours worked, activity performed or project completed, and the purpose for which the activity or project served the organization or community).
Additional credit for hours earned beyond the MSDE requirement of 75 Service Learning hours will not be recorded on a student’s transcript. Students are permitted to submit documentation of additional hours for inclusion in their permanent record. Information about Service Learning projects may be used to supplement a student’s resume and can be referred to when counselors write letters of recommendation to colleges and employers.
Students may not build credit in advance of course requirements. Service learning projects also count as part of the student’s grade for the course in which they are earned.
Students who transfer into an Anne Arundel County public high school from out of state must show completion of 40 hours of Service Learning in order to meet the MSDE graduation requirements for the high school level.
Any student who transfers into an Anne Arundel County public school from any other school from within the state of Maryland must show documentation for 40 hours of Service Learning from their previous school(s) or complete the balance for a total of 40 hours.
